Rugby "The Basics"
Positions
The forwards primary role is the ‘muscle’ of the team. They are the ones who usually
instigate rucks and mauls, make up the scrum and take control of lineouts.
The Backs are usually quicker runners who would use space and agility to progress up the
pitch instead of brute force.

The aim of rugby is simple, to go forward with the ball, only
ever pass backwards and to get more points that the other team.
Scoring!!
A Try (5 points) - A try is when the attacking team grounds the
ball over the oppositions try line. A try can be prevented by the defending team touching down the ball first within their
goal area.
Conversion (2 points) - A conversion kick can be taken after a
try is scored. A member of the attacking team has to kick the ball from the ground between the posts (and over the cross bar).
Penalty/ Drop goal (3 points) - A penalty kick is taken
when an opposition player has commited an offence. A drop goal is scored when player kicks the ball from hand through the
opposition's goal posts.
Scrum.
A scrum is called to restart play when:
The ball has been knocked on
The ball has gone forward
Accidental offside
The ball has not come out from a ruck or maul
Eight players from each team known as the forwards come together
to form the scrum, they bind on to each other to try and hook the ball and pass it to back of their "pack",
the ball is then passed out to the rest of the team to carry on play.

Rucks & Mauls
Rucks and mauls are when the ball has stopped eg. through a tackle
and the players have closed around the ball. Any players which form a ruck or maul must be on their feet.
A Ruck - A ruck is when the ball is on the ground and can not
be handled, players then ruck it back with their feet. A ruck is made of at least two players from each team.
A Maul- A maul is made of at least three players, with at least
one of the three players being from the opposition, the ball is kept off the ground and can be passed back by hand to
the players own team.
Line Out
A line out is another way of restarting play when the ball has gone out
of play over the touch lines. Each team must have a between three and eight players in the line out. The aim of the line is
to gain possesion of the ball from the throw in. The line out is awarded against the team who last touched
the ball.
Duration
A game lasts 80 minutes, consisting of two halves. Teams change ends after
half time. Extra time is only played when it is a draw in a knock out competition.
